5 Top Tips To Maintain Festival Security

Music festivals are a great way to see your favourite bands/DJ’s in the flesh, experience a plethora of memorable moments that you can tell your grandkids in years to come, and above all they’re a great way to kick back, relax and be yourself (or someone else for that matter) for a few days. Whatever your reasons for going there are bound to be plenty of other people there too and although many of them are good honest people looking to enjoy the buzz that a popular festival can bring, a tiny majority are there to pilfer other people’s belongings. To avoid this happening to you, here are 5 top festival security tips.

Tip 1- Never lock your tent

As crazy as it sounds sticking a big padlock on your tent only advertises to any passing thief that firstly you aren’t around and secondly, you’ve got something worth nicking. Besides a padlock is unlikely to deter a thief when they can run a Stanley knife down the side of the tent in seconds and bingo, they’re inside anyway. Instead, if you have to bring valuables, buy a bum bag and make sure that you carry them with you.

Tip 2 – Take note of your IMEI number

Just in case your mobile phone does get lost or stolen make a note of the unique IMEI number so that you can identify it if it does get handed in or found.

TIP 3 – Don’t take the crown jewels

Festivals aren’t the place for fancy jewellery or expensive watches so if you do need to take a watch or a pair of earrings, make sure that they’re ones that don’t matter quite so much if they get lost, or worse still stolen.

Tip 4 – Never carry all your money in one place

With lots of people about festivals can present golden opportunities for pickpockets. With this in mind, it’s advisable not to carry all your money on you that you need. Instead keep it in a variety of places so that if you do become a victim, you haven’t just lost everything you’ve saved up all year for.

Tip 5 – Make sure your money/valuables are hidden when you sleep

At the end of the day when you’re all partied out and it’s time to call it a night it’s all too easy to throw your valuables such as purse/wallet, mobile phone, money etc in a heap on the floor and climb into that comforting sleeping bag. Thieves know this and in the wee small hours will sneak into any tent when you’re asleep and pilfer your belongings. Even if you awake and challenge them all they’ve got to do is to shine a torch directly in your face and say they were looking for Dave, Tom, or Tracy etc, and then hastily make their exit. By the time you wake in the morning, your valuables are gone. The bottom line is to hide your valuables when you sleep, because remember, even if you’re covered for contents insurance at home, if they’re pinched from your tent, you’ll probably be entitled to nothing.
