Security Company Guard vs A Freelance Guard

The term ‘freelance’ seems to be everywhere these days and not without good reason. More and more people are looking to work for themselves and of course, setting yourself up as a freelancer gives you the opportunity to do this. From graphic designers and writers through to architects, business consultants and accountants, freelancers are making up more and more of the workforce. But what about security guards? Like any other freelance business, a security guard is no exception. They get their own clients and are not tied down to working for one organisation. However, when it comes to hiring security, do you opt for a Security Company guard or a freelancer? Let’s take a look at some of the advantages and disadvantages.

Security Guards at Stadium

Price

In many cases but not always, independent security guards can afford to undercut security companies in the price stakes because they’re not paying for office premises and they won’t have large overheads or wage bills to worry about. On the contrary if a security guard works for a company then it’s probably going to cost you more because the company in question will need to cover their day to day running and admin costs which are likely to be higher than that of an independent or freelance security guard.

Peace of Mind

When you hire a guard from a reputable security company then there’s a greater chance of total peace of mind. For example, the guard would have undergone a criminal background check, be fully licensed, and will have received at least a certain level of training. They’ll also be covered by the company’s insurance. This isn’t always guaranteed when you hire a freelance security guard.

Staffing Flexibility

Hiring a security guard from a security company is more likely to give you an element of flexibility. For example, if you didn’t want to hire a guard full time and instead use them only when you need them, it’s possible to do this with a security company. They are also obliged to provide cover for time off and when guards phone in sick. On the contrary, an independent security guard probably won’t be as flexible simply because they can’t afford to be. Then of course you also run the risk of them calling in sick and having no security cover.

If your decision is likely to be based on price alone, then you might pay you to opt for a freelance security guard. Conversely if you’re after both peace of mind and flexibility and can afford to pay for what that’s worth, then a guard from a security company offers a safer, hassle-free option.
