Security guards tend to carry a lot of gear and the good ones are prepared for every eventuality. They carry equipment designed to not only make life easier for themselves, but the property or person they’re assigned to. With this in mind, we thought we’d take a glimpse into the world of what a professional security guard carries when they’re on a job.
Torch
Yes you’ve guessed it! This is probably the most essential piece of kit that any security guard needs. As many assignments occur at night a good quality reliable torch is key. Something like a Maglite is best because of it’s brightness durability and ease of use.
Boots
There’s nothing better than a comfortable pair of shoes, or in this case boots! Let’s face it whether the person in question is assigned to static guarding, mobile patrols, crowd control or even personal assignments, it requires a lot of standing. A bad pair of boots or shoes can give you backache not to mention blisters. So if you aren’t supplied with them, then it pays to invest in a good pair that are going to last.
Mobile phone
Most of us carry a mobile phone around with us anyway, so it isn’t unusual but it could be a vital piece of kit for a security guard. Even though most communication is done through walkie-talkies or some other type of communication device, a mobile phone makes it easier to contact the authorities such as fire, police or ambulance should the need arise. It’s also a good idea to put important numbers such as these on speed dial should the guard need to act quickly.
Digital camera
Often referred to as a security guard’s best friend, a digital camera can be used to report and gather evidence or help to describe different situations or events should the need arise. A good quality mobile phone is likely to have an in-built digital camera and many come with a video facility which is even better, but for those that don’t, a separate camera is vital.
Mini first aid kit
First aid kits don’t have to come in huge red and white boxes. They also come in compact, pocket-sized varieties and this is the type that would benefit a security guard. Being visible, you never know when someone’s going to come up to you and ask for a plaster and besides that, a good band-aid could also help to cover up the blisters that your new boots are causing. In all seriousness though, you never know when you’re going to need it.
Security belt
So you’ve now got all this kit, where are you going to put it! You could of course put it all in a rucksack, but that means that in the event of an emergency, you’d have to spend time fumbling around trying to find exactly what you need. Instead, a security belt is the best idea. It straps neatly round the waist and gives you instant access to your equipment when you need it most.
Wet weather gear
The final and probably the most essential piece of kit is some wet weather gear. There’s nothing worse that getting soaked through to the skin on the job, to put you off being a security guard for good! Therefore a good set of water-proofs to keep you dry is essential.
