Lock it up
The majority of property burglaries aren’t premeditated. Instead they’re carried out by opportunists looking for easy pickings. There’s nothing more easy to them than leaving windows or doors open. Even if you pop down to the local shops for a pint of milk make sure your property is locked.
Don’t give them cover
Opportunists or not, thieves prefer to enter property under cover. This doesn’t mean a stripy jumper and a swag bag, but cover in the way of trees and bushes that obscure your front door from prying eyes. Why not look to cut back trees and install some motion sensor lighting so anyone entering your property can easily be seen.
Upgrading your security
This doesn’t necessarily mean spending thousands of dollars on the latest CCTV technology, but grills and shutters are harder to break into and they won’t ruin the overall look of your property.
Fit outdoor lighting
Sometimes burglars prefer to target garden sheds and garages, rather than the house itself, so why not look to fit some automatic outdoor lighting to act as a deterrent.
When you go away
Ask a friend, neighbour, or relative to keep an eye on the place for you. A property that looks as if it isn’t lived in is going to be much more of a target. Instead get your neighbour to park their car in your driveway, keep all mail from building up in your letter box and check the property sporadically
Safe guard your keys
You might want to think twice before handing over your keys to tradespeople or even acquaintances. It takes only a few minutes to get a set of keys copied and hey presto, you’ve just given a burglar a set of keys to your house. It doesn’t get much easier than that! In addition if you are going to keep keys outside, try not to leave them under he obligatory doormat because it’s the first place a thief might look.
Don’t leave your valuables on display
We’ve already established that most burglaries are opportunist and therefore what better opportunity for a passing thief than to be walking past your house and seeing attractive goodies inside. It’s far better to keep them in a safe, if possible, or out of immediate vision if not.
Never advertise the fact that you have valuables
So you’ve just bought the latest curved screen TV. The last thing you want to do is to advertise the fact to passer’s-by by leaving the packaging on your drive. It’s far better to rip it up and place it into the bin or take it straight down the recycling plant.
Get a dog
Okay so you need to be an animal lover obviously but a barking dog is a great deterrent to any would-be thief
Make friends with neighbours
By being friendly with neighbours you can look out for each other. Neighbours can report any suspicious activity and when they’re away, you can do the same.
