Top Tips For Winter Home Security

Now that winter is well and truly upon us it’s time to consider your home security. Long dark nights give thieves more opportunity to break into properties or steal items which may have been left outside in car ports or yards.

Leaving a window open or items laying around outside is easily done when you’re in a rush to get into the warmth of your house. Many people also book long vacations this time of the year which inadvertently makes their empty house a great target for thieves.

If you don’t want to fall victim to thieves then now is an important time to step up your home security. Installing security alarms or CCTV cameras as well as creating the impression that someone is at home, may deter thieves and reduce the risk of your property being broken into.

Top Tips

We’ve put together 7 tips to help protect you, your family, and your property from theft, so without further ado, let’s take a closer look.

  • Did you know that almost 12% of break-ins were through windows that had been left unlocked? Before leaving your property always double check that all doors and windows are securely locked.

  • If you regularly arrive home after dark or you travel a lot, then consider installing automatic timers to switch on some lights indoors to give the impression that someone is at home. Remember to draw down a blind or close your curtains when settings automatic timers, so that no-one can see inside your rooms when the lights come on.

  • Thieves love nothing better than an access door which is partly obscured by shrubs and hedges and totally dark. Consider installing exterior motion lights at all access points which will illuminate the area when they sense any kind of movement, and cut back any shrubs to give a clearer view.

  • Take the time to check that your existing outdoor security lighting is indeed working and hasn’t been damaged by the rain or inclement weather conditions.

  • Clear away any outdoor furniture or ladders which could help intruders climb through upper windows, and keep them under lock and key.

  • A monitored alarm system provides an added dimension of security for peace of mind. Often an alarm ringing on its own will be ignored by passers by or neighbours, whereas you can expect a speedy response to a monitored alarm.

  • It’s always a good idea to let a neighbour that you trust know if you are going away for a long weekend or vacation, since this will alert them to act on any activity they view as suspicious.
