Take Thessa for example. Thessa is a 16 year old girl from Hamburg Germany whose parents let her organise a party to celebrate her16th birthday party. In doing so she decided to use Facebook to invite her friends. Unbeknown to her, she had inadvertently sent the invitation out not only to her connections but to everyone as a public event. Within just a few hours she had a staggering 15000 responses from people she didn’t even know, all wanting to come.
Upon realising her mistake she quickly fired off a cancellation notice but nevertheless around 1400 people still descended upon her Hamburg home. Luckily her parents had hired a birthday party security firm to cope with the expected masses. There were also 100 police officers at the ready just in case things got out of hand. Although the police cordoned off Thessa’s home the crowd still managed to party the night away just a little distance from the house.
While any major catastrophes were averted, some vehicles were reported vandalised and rubbish bins were set on fire with 11 arrests made. Perhaps the surprising thing was that in amongst the meleé Thessa was at her Grandmother’s house for safety.
