In a word, No!
Well at least, not like a strong lock and key, or the presence of a security guard would. Surveillance cameras can’t for instance stop a crime when it’s in progress, or alert the authorities like an alarm system would. However what they can do is act as a strong deterrent.
Now that’s not to say that it would put the most determined of people off because let’s face it… if someone was hell bent in breaking into your premises, it wouldn’t matter if you’d spend thousands of dollars on the latest security system, chances are that they’re likely to break in regardless.
That said, what security cameras do manage to do is to deter the ‘opportunist’. This is the type of criminal who is seeking an opportunity to steal. These people are usually after easy pickings. A quick route in and out, an open window, or lots of cover allowing them to do what they need to do without being detected. A premises that is fitted with CCTV just so happens to make things far more risky and as such, they might think twice before trying. What’s more, most business break-ins occurred, not because it’s been meticulously planned, but because the opportunity was available.
So what’s the best solution?
By far the best solution is to use CCTV surveillance in conjunction with other security measures such as an alarm system, adequate lighting, and security surveillance patrols. These methods are more likely to deter a criminal from breaking and entering in the first instance, while the surveillance equipment can play its part in identifying the suspect/s and documenting the date and time the incident happened.
The good news is that you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars on the latest CCTV, but you do need one that is vandal proof and is able to give you good vision at night. If you are considering installing or upgrading your CCTV/alarm system then come and talk to MA Security.
