How To Select The Best PIN For Your Security Alarm System

As far as business security goes, it all starts with your security alarm system. These alarm systems give you that reassuring feeling that if someone tried to force the door or attempt a break in, they’d immediately trip a sensor which would then trigger off the alarm. Once this happens then (hopefully) it’s only a matter of time before a professional security team are at your premises. That is of course as long as the person entering hasn’t managed to disable your alarm by guessing your Personal Identification Number, or PIN for short.

So how do you avoid this?

The trick is to be able to make your PIN easy enough so that it can be remembered by you, or those who are tasked with opening up your premises, but difficult enough not to be easily cracked by any potential thief. Let’s take a closer look at how you can do this.

Eliminating common ideas

As already stated you’re going to need a PIN which is easily remembered. After all, you’ll be using it every day. However it’s always best to avoid common factors such as birth years or other significant dates such as year of marriage. The reason is that any half intelligent burglar will know that there’s a strong chance that your pin begins with 19xx or 20xx. This being the case, then that’s half of it cracked right there!

Avoid sequential numbers

Try and avoid any numbers in sequence too or duplicated numbers for that matter. Again it makes it easy for a burglar to ‘get lucky’ should they choose to try and decipher your code.

Avoid default pins

Finally avoid keeping the default setting. These are normally issued when a new alarm is installed and therefore should be changed right away.

So what should you do instead?

How about selecting a PIN that means something to you but isn’t easily traceable. For example you could have the first two digits of your date of birth combined with the last two digits of your phone number. Alternatively you could get really smart and think of a four letter word and use their numeric counterparts instead. Finally once you have your code, then don’t forget to change your code every six months to make it as fail-safe as possible.
